What is a Sensory Room?

Our entire experience of life is contruscted through our complex sensory system. The senses play a fundamental role in our ability to regulate emotions, mood and behaviour.

Sensory rooms are purposefully designed spaces that stimulate and engage the senses to elicit therapeutic outcomes. First designed in the 1970s, sensory rooms are now used in a wide range of health and social settings from interactive / playbased rooms to assist with developmental skills to dedicated calming rooms to provide emotion regulatory benefits.

At Creative Sensory Spaces, we specialise in calming sensory rooms.

Benefits of a Sensory Room

Promotes Calm and Reduces Anxiety

A calming sensory room offers a safe, predictable environment where individuals can retreat from overstimulation, helping to regulate the nervous system and quickly lower stress levels.

Enhances Focus and Concentration

By providing an optimal level of stimulation, these environments help individuals with sensory processing differences filter distractions, preparing them to engage more effectively in learning or therapy.

Develops Key Cognitive Skills

Through interactive equipment and varied stimuli, sensory rooms encourage exploration and problem-solving, which naturally strengthen skills like communication, tracking, and cause-and-effect understanding.

Supports Emotional Self-Regulation

Regular use of a sensory room teaches individuals to identify their own sensory needs and choose appropriate tools (sensory room equipment), leading to better control over their behaviors and emotions.

Perfect for Our School

The sensory room equipment for schools is excellent. It provides a quiet, dedicated space that significantly improves student focus and prepares them to return to the classroom.
